We all know the gingerbread man as something that is associated with Christmas and the holidays. Not many people know that the story of the gingerbread man actually started as a gift for someone special and therefore had nothing to do with Christmas. It was Queen Elizabeth I who came up with the idea to 'dress' men made of gingerbread when special guests from the nobility came to visit her. A special gift for a special person. Decorating gingerbread shapes quickly became a hype. During Gingerbread Fairs, festivals where gingerbread played a leading role, gingerbread men were handed out. The shapes of gingerbread men differed per season. For example, in the summer, the bakers baked beautiful flowers that were decorated with gold leaf.
